Liz to Leonora

Wow it’s been a crazy couple of weeks! This past Friday we were finally told where our permanent sites will be, starting mid-August! I guess they use to wait till week 5 or 6 but past groups complained about the wait so the staff decided to tell us at the end of week 3!

I have been placed in Region 3, in a town called Leonora (pronounced Lenora)! It’s located along the coast in an area called East Demerara and is about 35 min north from the Capitol. I think most people would be excited to be at this site because it’s the closest site to Georgetown but they specifically put me here because it is where the Guyana Track and field stadium was built in 2015!! (Screaming internally)

Thursday night before we found out our locations I had actually looked online to see where the track was and it didn’t even cross my mind that someone could be placed in that town. I guess you could say that the Peace corps staff knows me so well:) Although my main focus will be health education in a secondary school, I am really excited to see what kind of secondary project I can do involving Track and Field:)

I will be working in the Leonora secondary school, co-teaching with another teacher. We will be working together to organize and implement the HFLE curriculum (Health and Family Life Education) to students ages 10-14. I also will be observing my town and school and coming up with secondary projects like clubs or after school programs that they might want/ need. Then once a week I will working in a local clinic.

I’m super excited to get started but we still have 7 weeks of training so I’ll continue to learn as much as I can and wait patiently:)

I hope everyone is enjoy summer!

Happy 4th of July!
